When Westside began, three groups of churches gave our church financial support to help us get started:
-
Triangle Baptist Association
- 16 churches and missions that fellowship together and work together to reach the Triangle area.
- Montana Southern Baptist Fellowship
- 110 churches and missions that fellowship together with the goal of evangelizing our state.
- The Southern Baptist Convention
- 40,00 churches and missions that cooperate together in a world-wide effort of missions.
We now wholeheartedly support these three groups in helping start many other new churches. This past year we have had two new rural Bible studies started in Triangle and about 12 new churches started in Montana.
What is the Southern Baptist Convention?
It is the largest association of Christian churches in America. One out of every 10 churches in America is affiliated with the SBC (40,000 churches and 15 million members).
We have a mandate to share the gospel with every person in the world by the year 2000. We support this mandate by a program called "The Cooperative Program."
- We send out over 8,000 full-time missionaries and over 50,000 volunteer missionaries
- We have six seminaries and about 30 Christian colleges.
- We support hospitals, rescue missions, inner-city missions, and a score of other outreach ministries.
Our church gives 5% of our offerings to the Cooperative program, 3% to Association Missions, 1% to the Great Falls Rescue Missions and 1% to Westside missions.
Why not just be an independent church?
We are an independent church! Every SBC church is completely independent. There is no denominational control or hierarchy, as there is in some other denominations. Each church is self-governed and determines its own affairs. For example:
- Every SBC church chooses its own pastor
- Every SBC church owns its own buildings and assets
- Every SBC church determines its own programs
What are the advantages of affiliating with the SBC?
It allows us to identify with other Christians around the world who are know for their commitment to the Bible and to missions. Unlike other groups, the SBC has no man-made creed. The Bible is our authority. It allows us to participate in the largest missionary organization in the world.
