The structure of the church should not be determined by culture, business practices, or even denominational traditions. The nature of the church determines its structure.
-
The church is a fellowship, not a business! .
- Acts 2:42 - "They continued steadily learning the teaching of the apostles, and joined in the fellowship."
-
A top priority in fellowship is in unity and harmony. .
- Ephesians 4:3. - "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."
- Any attitude that causes disunity is sin:
- Col 3:15 - And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.
1 Cor 1:10 -
Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.
2 Tim 2:14 -
Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless, and leads to the ruin of the hearers.
Prov 17:14 -
The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so abandon the quarrel before it breaks out.
2 Cor 13:11 -
Finally, brethren, rejoice, be made complete, be comforted, be like-minded, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
Phil 1:27 -
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ; so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Phil 2:1-3 -
If therefore there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself;
- So, by implication, a good structure based on biblical principels promotes unity and downplays differences.
- Cor 11:17,18 - - "(Often) … your meetings do more harm than good because I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you …"
- In that vein, voting tends to divide. At Westside Baptist Church, we only vote on:
-
- Annual Budgets
- Purchase of land and buildings
- Calling of elders
- Changes in church constitution
- Elders & Deacons
- Church membership
- The Church is a family.
- 1 Pet 3:8 - "You should be like one big family, full of sympathy toward each other, loving one another with tender hearts and humble minds."
- We have a council.
- Here at Westside Baptist Church, we have an elder~deacon structure. Our elders are the servant-leaders and the deacons assist them and serve the congregation in the spiritual health and ministry of our church.
